Attractions
The city of Lome lies in the extreme south west of Togo, up against the Ghanaian border. Visitors to the city must see the Lome Grand Market, the Togo National Museum in the Palais de Congrés, a fetish market, the Lome Cathedral and the former wharf. The city is also home to some of the most alluring beaches. The University of Benin is located in Lome. Visitors can see the 2 Fevrier Sofitel Hotel building, the tallest building in Lome and in fact all of Togo. The former railway line to Blitta runs from the city.
Lome was known as the pearl of West Africa until political troubles shook it in the 1990s. Nearly everyone who passed by the city stopped to spend some time at the beaches. French and Germans would flock in during the winter giving the city's five-star hotels and fine restaurants some fine business. However, today travellers are fairly scarce and many businesses are just getting by. Only a few hotels still do a brisk business and most tourist facilities now bide their time in a semi-deserted ambience. There are a few Internet cafés opening up in Lome with cheap and reliable connections.
